James Gunn is the rare filmmaker to be working in both the DC and Marvel film worlds, and he got the latter job back the day after he agreed to the former. Gunn spoke with Empire for a new interview and revealed that his return to Guardians of the Galaxy came right on the heels of his agreeing to direct The Suicide Squad.

Gunn was famously fired from Guardians Vol. 3 after old offensive tweets he’d made resurfaced, which prompted the entire cast of the MCU film to speak out in support of him. He was off the project for just under a year before Marvel announced in March of 2019 that he was being brought back to direct the film, which he co-wrote.

“It was a happy ending, but it was also scary because I actually got the call from Alan Horn long before it was announced,” Gunn said. “It happened literally the day after I agreed to do The Suicide Squad.”

The Suicide Squad is currently set to release on August 6th, 2021, while Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 does not yet have a release date, nor has it yet entered production.
