James Gunn Says a Brightburn Sequel is in Development

Brightburn may not have been box office gold for Screen Gems, but it apparently did well enough that a sequel is in discussions. James Gunn told a fan on Instagram (per EW) that the superhero horror film may get a follow-up, noting, “I think I’m tied up for the next few years with Suicide Squad and then Guardians [of the Galaxy 3], but we’re talking about the sequel.”

Brightburn starred Jackson A. Dunn as Brandon Breyer, a boy who is found at birth by a couple (Elizabeth Banks & David Denman) as a baby when the pod holding him crashes down near their home. As he grows older, Brandon develops superpowers and uses them to terrorize the people of his community. The David Yarovesky-directed film, which Gunn produced, was left open for a sequel but the mild box office ($32.6 million against a $6 million budget plus marketing) left many wondering if a sequel would come about.
