In an eyebrow-raising development, Jamie Foxx is reportedly returning to the Marvel universe as Electro in the MCU-set Spider-Man 3. THR reports that Sony is in final talks for Foxx to reprise the role he played in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The catch of course is that Foxx’s Electro was set in an entirely different Spider-Man continuity, which had no connection to the MCU and had Andrew Garfield playing Peter Parker. He would however be the second actor to jump live-action Spider-universes; J.K. Simmons reprised his role from the Sam Raimi films as J. Jonah Jameson at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and speculation has been rife that Sony’s Spider-Man universe characters like Venom and Morbius could cross over into the MCU soon.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a financial disappointment with $708.9 million worldwide, below the first film’s $757.9 million. The lukewarm reception from fans and critics led Sony to cancel plans for a third film and spin-offs at the time, which paved the way for Spidey to enter the MCU with Tom Holland.

Spider-Man 3 is set to release on December 17th, 2021 after a couple of delays, with plans to shoot in February. Holland will reprise his role in the film along with Zendaya as MJ.
