Jason Reitman has confirmed that despite what some may have speculated, Ghostbusters: Afterlife did not take Ghostbusters II out of canon. Reitman spoke with Uproxx for a new interview promoting the film that released this weekend and addressed some questions about the new film’s relationship to the previous entries.

Asked if Egon changed the logo back to the original after it was changed to the “Two” logo seen in the sequel, Reitman said, “I wish I could talk to you about that. I’m just saying that’s a plot that is not in this film and we have ideas moving forward.”

He went on to confirm the canon status of the second film, saying, “And Ghostbusters II is canon. Ghostbusters II, definitely canon. There are references to Ghostbusters II in Afterlife. We meet Ray working at Ray’s Occult. The toaster from Ghostbusters II is in the kitchen in the farmhouse. There’s actually lots of Ghostbusters II details but nobody knows Ghostbusters II outside of Viggo the Carpathian and the Ghostbusters II logo. So there’s this assumption that it is not canon, but it is definitely canon.”

Ghostbusters: Afterlife got off to a good start this weekend, over-performing with a $44 million domestic start.
