Jimmy Fallon returned to host The Tonight Show last night after taking a week off due to the death of his mother Gloria. Fallon opened the show with a tribute to his late mother.

He said: “She was the best audience. She was the one I was always trying to make laugh,” Fallon began. “She was such a fan of the show, and everything I did. When we were little, my mom would walk us to the store — me and my sister — and we would hold hands. And she would squeeze my hand three times and say, ‘I love you.’ And I would squeeze back, ‘I love you, too’. Last week, I was in the hospital, and I grabbed her hand and squeezed, ‘I love you.’ I just knew we were in trouble.

He thanked his fans and the studio audience for supporting him and said that “we’re going to continue to work really hard to bring some light and laughter into the world.”

Later on in the show, Taylor Swift did a live performance of “New Year’s Day,” which actually includes a bit about hands squeezing three times. The odd thing is, Fallon hadn’t shared that story about his mother before. Swift then approached Fallon and gave him a hug.

In a string of posts on Twitter, show writer Mike DiCenzo spoke about the making of the episode and getting Swift to perform, as she wasn’t scheduled.
