A Quiet Place: Part II is expanding the horror franchise’s world with some new characters, and John Krasinski has provided some insight on them. Krasinski spoke with EW about the horror sequel, which opens on March 20th, and discussed Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou’s new characters who provide a different perspective than Emily Blunt’s Abbott family.

“[Our] family has support, they have an entire system of living, and most importantly, they have love,” Krasinski, who wrote and directed both films, told the site.”If you are alone and you’ve seen the negative effect of the world, you lose hope.”

Krasinski noted that Murphy’s character represents “survival in its purest form, which is really, really dark” and that Hounsou’s character is “doing slightly better … [he’s] found a way to live somewhat similarly to our family, and you have to figure out why he was able to do this.

Following the deadly events at home, A Quiet Place: Part II finds the Abbott family (Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) now needing face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path.
