Joker Takes $13.3 Million in Previews, Targeting $90 Million-Plus Weekend

All the controversy seems to have done Joker good, as it’s taking aim for a $90 million or more weekend. The R-rated DC Comics adaptation starring Joaquin Phoenix broke the October preview record with $13.3 million per Deadline, besting the previous $10 million record set by Venom last year.

That’s stellar news for the film, which was aiming at $80 million to $90 million coming into the weekend and is now projected to open north of that. It’s still early, but very preliminary Friday estimates based on earlier in the day business has it at a $39 million opening day (including previews). Joker could crash from here, but the B+ CinemaScore is a good sign that it won’t, and could get even higher.

In addition, the film currently has an estimated $24.6 million overseas through Thursday in 47 markets, and is expected to grow to $80 million to $90 million or more by Sunday. That’s huge business for a relatively cheap film at around $60 million or so, especially one that’s R-rated.

I’ll have my full box office report on Sunday as per usual.
