Joss Whedon will no longer write and direct DC’s Batgirl. THR reports that Wheon, who was announced as taking on the DCEU film last year, is exiting the project. The site says that Whedon tried to come up with a story that worked for the film, but was unable to “crack the code of what a Batgirl movie should be.”

“Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” Whedon told the site. “I’m grateful to Geoff [Johns] and Toby [Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed’?”

Whedon rather famously came on board Justice League for rewrites and to oversee post-production and editing after Zack Snyder stepped away due to a family tragedy. The site says that Whedon’s relationship with Warner Bros. remains a strong one.
