While Paul Walker tragically died while production was taking place on Furious 7, his character remains alive in continuity as confirmed by F9 director Justin Lin. Lin spoke with EW for a new interview about the film, and noted that Brian O’Connor is still living and that it is something that “needs to be acknowledged.”

“Yeah, that is a constant issue and something I always want to be very respectful of,” Lin told the site. “The fact that Brian O’Conner is still alive in this universe needs to be acknowledged. We’re treating F9 as the first film of the last chapter, and at some point it is something I think about and how we can really show his presence but in a respectful way. So it’s always ongoing. I feel like in 9 we’ve done it in a way that I feel good about, but, as we go into trying to wrap up the saga, it’s something that I will continue to always be thinking through.”

The newest film is set to release on June 25th and stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, John Cena, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, and Cardi B. It’s described as follows:

Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena).
