Kevin Feige says that a movie based on the Eternals is in the very early stages of development. Feige spoke with The Wrap and said that the studio is looking at the cosmic characters as a possible source for a post-Phase Three MCU film.

“‘Eternals’ is one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate,” Feige said. “We have started working on what are the films post-phase 3.”

Speaking of the final stages of Phase Three, which comes to a close with Avengers 4, “Those are the five things that are taking up 90 percent of our time. But there’s 10 percent we’re starting to go, ‘What’s going to be best?’ And some of that is you can take cues from everything we’ve done in the 22 movies before those — which is sequels to existing characters, new interpretation of existing characters and trying whole new swings with stuff that most people never heard of. So there are writers coming in on lots of different projects and lots of different ideas. And you’ll only start to hear more and more of it.”

The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby in 1976 and appeared in their own comic of the same name. Neil Gaiman provided an updated take on the characters in a 2006 miniseries that was illustrated by John Romita, Jr. Created by the Celestials, the Eternals were a race of proto-humans who were intended to be the defenders of Earth. The Wrap reports that the potential story may center on Sersi, who has been a member of the Avengers and Heroes for Fire as well as the Eternals. Sersi has psionic powers and can manipulate cosmic and molecular energy.
