John Wick Chapter 2

When a studio has a successful potential franchise these days, they know it’s time to strike before the iron has cooled too much. Lionsgate has found themselves in possession of just such a property in John Wick, the modestly-budgeted Keanu Reeves action vehicle that has turned out two nicely profitable films with a third on the way. And thus, it’s not a surprise that they’re considering their new female-led action film for potential development within the John Wick universe.

According to THR, the studio has picked up Ballerina, a female-fronted film from Shay Hatten. The film is being compared to La Femme Nikita and follows a young assassin who vows revenge against those that killed her family.

The setting of John Wick is built around a shadowy underworld of assassins who operate through an international organization that is facilitated through the Continental Hotels, which offer services to assassins and handle contracts. Ian McShane, Lance Reddick and Franco Nero have all played characters who are part of the Continental infrastructure, which has confirmed locations in New York City and Rome; presumably there are Continentals throughout the world.

John Wick‘s Basil Iwanyk is set to produce the Ballerina movie through his Thunder Road company. The John Wick franchise has grossed $259 million worldwide between the two films on a total production budget of $60 million, with a third film in development.
