The event that wiped out half of the MCU’s population officially has a name. Screen Rant reports that the event that concluded Avengers: Infinity War, in which Thanos snapped his fingers with the Infinity Gauntlet to remove half of the life from the universe, is known as “The Decimation” in the MCU. The name comes from Brandon T. Snider’s official tie-in The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath. The move was unofficially called “The Snap” or “The Snappening” by fans. It’s a move that turned many lives into dust, including Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and other heroes.

The term is pulled from the comics, as in the House of M storyline, Scarlet Witch removed most of the world’s mutant population by saying, “no more mutants,” a move that de-powered many characters and left only a few with their abilities. Many mutants died as a result, as they were in dangerous situations or simply committed suicide due to losing what they felt made them special. Both the X-Men and the Avengers kept the news that it was Scarlet Witch who did it a secret.
