NBC Begins Production on Young Rock

NBC has begun filming on their new Young Rock sitcom, based on the life of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Universal Television announced on Monday (per Deadline that the series has begun filming at Screen Queensland Studios in Australia and will shoot at additional locales in and around Brisbane and South East Queensland, Australia.

The series has an 11-episode first season ordered and will debut at midseason. Johnson will appear in all episodes of the show which stars Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant, and Uli Latukefu as Johnson in various stages of his life (10, 15, and 18 – 20, respectively). Stacey Leilua is set to play Johnson’s mother Ata, while Joseph Lee Anderson will play Rocky Johnson and Ana Tuisila plays Lia Maivia, Ata’s mother and Dwayne’s grandmother.

The series will be executive produced by Nahnatchka Khan, Johnson, Jeff Chiang, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz and Jennifer Carreras. Jeffrey Walker serves as producer director / co-EP for the series, which is written by Khan (Fresh Off the Boat) and Chiang. The show is described as follows:

“From growing up in a strong and resilient family, to being surrounded by the wild characters of his professional wrestling family, to playing football at the University of Miami, the show will explore the crazy rollercoaster that has shaped Dwayne into the man he is today and the larger-than-life characters he’s met along the way.”
