Neil Gaiman Says Sandman Series Is On Hold Due to COVID-19
There’s been a long road to get Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman to the screen, and as you might imagine, the COVID-19 pandemic has added a new temporary wrinkle. Gaiman answered a question from a fan on his Tumblr account about the status of the planned Netflix adaptation of the iconic comic book series, and he said it was moving along nicely until the pandemic hit.
“It’s going really well, except it’s kind of hibernating right now until people start making TV again,” Gaiman said. “The scripts for the first season are written, casting had started, directors hired, sets were being built. Everything was ready to go into production, and then we moved into a pause. As soon as the world is ready to make TV drama, Sandman will move smoothly back into being made. In the meantime, we are taking the opportunity to get the scripts as good as we can.”
The series was ordered by Netflix last season, with Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman) writing and showrunning the series. It’s the latest in a long, long line to bring the cosmic/supernatual comic book series to live action including several attempts to adapt it to film.
