The Wall Street Journal reports that Netflix came close to cancelling their hit series GLOW after one season because the viewership numbers weren’t that high.

The series went on to earn ten Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series. A source said that there “were serious conversations from the tech side pressuring the Hollywood side not to renew it for a second season.” The technical people at Netflix said the viewership numbers were low, but the “Hollywood side” thought they should keep the show because of creator Jenji Kohan’s importance to Netflix and the show’s critical acclaim. Kohan is also the creator of Orange is the New Black, one of the most popular shows on the service.

Kohan didn’t approve of Netflix’s marketing of Glow, “which executives said was based on internal data to attract viewers. She felt it catered to males when the show was really geared to women.”

GLOW not only came back for a second season, but was also renewed for a third.
