Variety reports that Netflix will create an animated event series based on the books of Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda. The deal has the blessing of his family and will be produced along with the Roald Dahl Story Company. Netflix said it will remain faithful to the “quintessential spirit and tone” of Dahl’s books. However, they aren’t just going to adapt the books, rather they will create a “story universe” that will go beyond the books. Melissa Cobb, VP of kids & family content, said some of stories could “potentially overlap.”

She added: “There will be threads that connect all of them. We want to do the animation in the style of Dahl.

The list of titles in the deal include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator and George’s Marvellous Medicine. Books like James and the Giant Peach and The Fantastic Mr. Fox were not included. The first series begins production next year.

Dahl’s widow Felicty said: “Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories. This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.
