George R.R. Martin has offered up a few new hints regarding one of the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff series in a new blog post. Martin has confirmed that the spinoff series he is working on with Game of Thrones producer Bryan Cogman which we reported on earlier this week will be an adaptation.

“I can say that, like the other pilots, it will be a prequel rather than sequel, a successor rather than a spinoff. Bryan’s series will be an adaptation, and one that will thrill most fans of the books, I think, set during a very exciting period of Westerosi history. And I’ll be working with him every step of the way; we’re going to be co-creating the show.”

Martin has previously stated that his Dunk and Egg novellas and the story of Robert’s Rebellion are off the table, leading to speculation that the series with Cogman may be based around a story from The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros.

Martin also added two other hints by calling Cogman the “Keeper of Lore” and “Prince of Dragonston” in the post.

“If [David Benioff and Dan Weiss] have been the kings of Westeros for these past seven seasons, Bryan Cogman has surely been the Prince of Dragonstone. Yep, that Dragonstone … ”

This might indicate that the spinoff series will focus on the Targaryens, perhaps showing when the Targaryens left Valyria, or Aegon’s Conquest of Westeros.

Martin also said the prequel could air as early as 2019 or 2020.

The final season of Game of Thrones is expected to debut in late 2018 or early 2019, so one would assume that any spinoff series would begin after that.
