New Trailer For Runaways Season Two Hints at MCU Connection

Hulu has released a trailer for Marvel’s Runaways season two, which has a hint at a connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You can see the trailer below, which previews the upcoming season pitting the Runaways against their villainous parents in The Pride, as well as Jonah and his nefarious goal for whatever is buried under Los Angeles.

Amidst the trailer, we see scenes of the teens developing their powers through training — in some cases, with their parents’ help which is a divergence from the comic. That includes Nico, who gets a brief shot with a clear reference to Doctor Strange. At the end of the trailer we see her using the Staff of One, which causes her eyes to develop the purple spiderweb-like cracks that Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelson) and his followers had in Doctor Strange. Those were the result of Kaecilius gaining access to the Dark Dimension, the realm of mystic power ruled by Dormammu.

It isn’t yet confirmed that this is what’s happening here, though the look is unmistakably similar. It would be the show’s most overt reference to magic yet. In season one, Nico’s mother Tina suggested the Staff of One operated in more of a scientific fashion. That said, she did appear in the Doctor Strange MCU prequel comic alongside Kaecilius.

Also seen in the trailer is our first look at Topher, the mysterious new acquaintance of the Runaways who has a secret of his own. The show returns on Hulu for its second season starting December 21st.
