Paramount is getting back on the race track, waving the green flag on a Sonic The Hedgehog sequel. Variety reports that Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy have confirmed that a sequel to the video game adaptation is in the works.

The film is still in the development stage, so casting and production start dates are not yet decided. However, Pat Casey and Josh Miller will be back to write the script and Jeff Fowler will return to direct the film.

Sonic broke through bad buzz during the production phase to become a surprise hit for Paramount in February. The film, which starred the voice of Ben Schwartz as Sonic alongside James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and Tika Sumpter, grossed $146.1 million domestically and $306.2 million worldwide against a $90 million production budget. It has also been a consistent chart topper in terms of home watching; it jumped back from #5 to #1 this week after being released on DVD/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD.
