Zatanna is set to make her big-screen debut soon, and DC Films has tapped Promising Young Woman writer-director Emerald Fennell to script the movie. Variety reports that Fennell will write the live-action take on the DC Comics sorcerer, which is being produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot shingle.

Fennell is currently a nominee for Best Director and Screenplay for Promising Young Woman, which is up for a total of five Oscars at this year’s awards show. She was also the showrunner for season two of Killing Eve and an actress, most recently playing Camilla Bowles in Netflix’s The Crown. No word on if she will direct the comics film.

Zatanna was created by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson, first appearing in November 1964’s Hawkman #4. Her full name is Zatanna Zatara and she is, like her father Giovanni (more commonly known as just Zatara), a stage magician and an actual magician, using backward language to pull off powerful feats of magic. Over her many years as one of DC’s most powerful magical characters, she has been associated with the Justice League and Justice League Dark. She’s also had a relationship with John Constantine, who is getting his own HBO Max series from Bad Robot which will tie into the streamer’s planned Justice League Dark series. It’s not clear if the movie will have ties to the Constantine and JL Dark shows.

No one has yet been cast to play Zatanna.
