Ridley Scott has not yet given up on his hope of making another prequel to Alien, thinking there’s still story to be told. Scott spoke with the LA Times about the original ALien and, during the interview, said that he doesn’t believe the franchise is done.

“I still think there’s a lot of mileage in Alien, but I think you’ll have to now re-evolve,” Scott said. “What I always thought when I was making it, the first one, why would a creature like this be made and why was it traveling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That’s the thing to question — who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think.”

Scott has directed two prequel films set in the same world. The first, Prometheus, released in 2012 and was written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof. That film was divisive among fans and critics but was a financial success. It’s follow-up was 2017’s Alien: Covenant which was far less loved and a box office disappointment with just $240.9 million worldwide against a $100 to $110 million production budget plus a hefty marketing campaign. The failure of Covenant put the franchise on hold, killing off Scott’s plans for a follow-up film.
