Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is done with the main Fast & Furious franchise, but Hobbs & Shaw will continue on according to producer Hiram Garcia. Johnson’s status for the final two Fast films has been a question mark for some time due to his well-known feud with Vin Diesel, and it was thrown even further in doubt when Diesel made comments about the feud coming from his attempt to deliver “tough love” to his fellow film star in order to give the performance he wanted. Now, Garcia confirmed to Collider that Johnson will not appear in Fast 10 or Fast 11, citing “all the evident reasons.” You can do the math.

“After filming Fast 8 [Johnson] made the clear decision to close the Fast & Furious chapter for all the evident reasons,” Garcia said. “He wished them all well and shifted our focus on to other story telling avenues. So while he will not be in F10 or F11, that won’t in any way interfere with our Hobbs plans.”

By “Hobbs plans,” Garcia is referencing the planned (but currently delayed) sequel to Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. The spinoff starred Johnson and Jason Statham as their Fast characters Lucas Hobs and Deckard Shaw, two longtime rivals who are forced to work together to stop a super-terrorist. The film was a sizable hit on its own, grossing $760.4 million worldwide against a $200 million budget. Garcia acknowledged the spinoff franchise’s Fast setting and said they’re rooting for success for the main franchise, as well as presumably the reported additional spinoff featuring Charlize Theron’s villainous hacker Cipher.

“Obviously all these characters exist in the Fast universe and we love to see all aspects of that universe thrive and succeed. We just have specific plans for what we want to do with the Hobbs character and I think the fans are going to love it! We’re working to deliver something very unique and fresh and we know the studio is eager for us to get into it ASAP!”

Hobbs & Shaw 2 has been held up due to both actors’ busy schedules as well as the pandemic, but Garcia noted that they’re in the process of working out the plan. “At the moment we’re trying to figure out what that sequel is going to be,” he said, “but we have some very big ideas.”
