June 24, 2016 | Posted by Joseph Lee

Deadline reports that Roland Emmerich (Independence Day: Resurgence) is set to direct the sci-fi movie Moonfall for Universal Pictures. Universal paid seven figures to acquire the spec script for the film, which Emmerich wrote with Harald Kloser and Spencer Cohen. Emmerich will also produce with Kloser. The film is expected to be put on the fast track for the studio. Both Sony and Fox were in talks to acquire the script before Universal made the deal.

The script is described as 2012 mixed with Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It follows an “unlikely band of misfits” who have to save the world when the moon falls out of orbit and starts moving towards Earth. This is the seventh film Emmerich and Kloser have worked on together after The Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 BC, 2012, Anonymous, White House Down and Independence Day: Resurgence.
