Sacha Baron Cohen Has Reportedly Filmed & Screened Secret Borat Sequel
Sacha Baron Cohen has reportedly completed a secret production process on a Borat sequel. Collider reports that Cohen completed filming on the as-yet-unannounced sequel to the 2006 box office smash comedy, and that the film has been screened privately for “a select few industry types.”
The original Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was a huge hit with critics and fans. The Larry Charles-directed film starred Cohen as his Kazakhstani reporter character who travels to the US to make a cross-country road trip, meeting real people in real situations.
According to Collider, it is unclear who was financing the film. The first film was produced through 20th Century Fox and while that company is owned by Disney now, it is not clear if Cohen has retained ownership as the character was based on pre-existing IP that he created. The site reports that the sequel sees Borat think that he’s a big movie start due to the original film and is trying to hide by pretending to be someone else.
