Scream Revival Reportedly Has Multiple Scripts, Edits

The new Scream sequel is following a particular throughline of the franchise in that it has multiple scripts and edits, according to a new report. Bloody Disgusting reports that the upcoming fifth film from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had multiple versions of the script and cuts of the film. This is being done, according to the report, to hide the final cut of the film from spoiler-seeking fans.

This is by no means a new tactic for the franchise. Scream 2 underwent rewrites after a copy of the script leaked online in 1997 during production. Kevin Williamson has said that there were several false endings written in order to protect the killers’ identities, which the third film made an on-screen reference to regarding its film-within-a-film Stab 3. Scream 4 saw the actors not given the full script in order to keep the identity of the killers from leaking online.

The new film (simply known as Scream) is written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and stars the returning Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Marley Shelton while new cast members include Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Kyle Gallner, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mikey Madison, Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera, and Jenna Ortega. It set to release on January 14th, 2022.
