If you’re worried about Nightwolf showing off his ‘cool’ animality, you can breathe a sigh of relief. In an interview with Comicbook.com, screenwriter Greg Russo said that he has no intention of repeating anything that the previous two Mortal Kombat films have done in his script for the upcoming reboot produced by James Wan. While the 1995 film Mortal Kombat has its fans, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is notoriously so-bad-it’s-good.

He said: “And the mission statement for the new film has always been, we don’t want to repeat what you’ve already seen. That doesn’t really appeal to anybody, I don’t think. And they already have those films. So at the same time we wanted to tell a new story that’s going to be exciting, but that’s gonna be faithful to the lore and the games that everybody knows and loves. So the mission statement was really just bring your passion to the project and let’s figure out what the best story is for a new film adaptation that feels fresh and at the same time pays respect to the game.

One thing that the previous two films didn’t do? Have an R rating. That’s something Russo is also promising, along with fatalties worthy of that kind of rating.
