Warner Bros. Pictures officially confirmed this week that the release date for the Shazam movie is currently set for April 5, 2019 release. The film will also be released in IMAX theaters.

The upcoming film is set to star Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Zachary Levi as Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel). The film also stars Mark Strong as the villain and Grace Fulton as a friend of Billy.

David F. Sandberg will direct from a script by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Peter Safran will produce. Shazam will be the next film produced in the DC Cinematic Universe before Flashpoint, Batgirl and Suicide Squad 2. DC and Warner Bros. are also working on a spin-off movie about Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson. Black Adam is not expected to be in Shazam.

In the film, much like the comics, Batson (Angel) can turn into the adult superhero, Shazam (Levi), when he calls out the magic word “Shazam!”, which is an acronym of the ancient gods and historical figures Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury.
