Stephen Lang is feeling confident about Avatar 2’s chances against Avengers: Endgame’s box office record when it finally releases. Lang, who is set to return as the villainous Colonel Miles Quaritch in the upcoming sequel, spoke with The National about the movie and when asked whether he thought the film would top Avengers: Endgame’s record $2.798 billion world box office, kept it nice and simple: “I expect so.”

Lang also spoke about Quaritch’s return after being seemingly killed off at the end of Avatar, saying, “It’s very satisfying to know that the character was valued enough and made enough of an impression to [have Cameron] say ‘we’re not done with him yet’. That, initially, was kind of wonderful, to me. My job is really to advocate the role that I’m playing, and so it’s satisfying to have that much more time to discover Quaritch, find out what makes him tick, talk about him, and hopefully defy expectations that people have for the character, to create new expectations. I’m working now with a much broader canvas than I was with the first Avatar, and it keeps me in concert with James Cameron to really go to town and examine the character in detail. That, to me, is totally tremendously satisfying and challenging.”

The film will see the returns of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, and Dileep Rao. New additions include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, and David Thewlis. The film is set to release on December 17th, 2021.
