Illumination Entertainment is developing an animated Super Mario Bros. movie. The film is still in the early stages of planning, according to the Wall Street Journal, with negotiations having been ongoing for over a year. The deal coincides with one that was reached last year to have attractions at Universal theme parks based on the Mario Bros. property.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the franchise, is expected to be a producer on the movie and will have creative input. The film won’t be out for years and will be animated at Mac Guff, Illumination’s Paris-based studio.

Nintendo has been particularly skittish about the possibility of licensing their properties after the first Super Mario Bros. film in 1993 was a critical and commerdial disaster. The franchises are lucrative; the Mario Bros. franchise is the best-selling series of all-time with over 330 million units sold.
