Taika Waititi Not Sure He’ll Direct Akira Anymore

Taika Waititi is no longer a lock to direct the live-action Akira remake. Waititi has been attached to the the long-gestating project since April of last year, but in a new interview after his win at the Oscars, he said that it may not end up being him due to the reason the film got delayed: his commitments to the next Thor movie.

“The whole thing went on hold,” Waititi told Variety. “We had to keep pushing the dates, and it encroached on the Thor dates, which were immovable. So Akira ended up shifting two years down the track… Post-Thor. So I’m not sure if even in two years I’d be — I don’t know what I’m doing in f**king two days.”

He concluded, “I think eventually it will happen. I’m just not sure if I’ll be doing it.”

Waititi was scheduled to co-write the anime adaptation with Michael Golamco, and would direct. The synopsis was described as follows:

A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath that only two teenagers and a group of psychics can stop.
