The new trailer for the long-delayed The New Mutants is here at last, and it contains some exciting moments for X-Men fans. 20th Century Fox and Marvel have released the new trailer for the film, which you can check out below.

The new preview brings some elements of the story into focus, showing Dani Moonstar (Blu Hunt) as our point of view character as she meets the other inmates at the asylum she’s in — the repressed Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), former mine worker Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton), the solar-powered Roberto DaCosta — aka Sunspot (Henry Zaga) — and Ilyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy), the sister of X-Men member Colossus. All of them are mutants who have manifested powers that are traumatizing them, and are being looked over by Cordelia Reyes (Alice Braga). They soon discover that where they are may not be for their own well-being, and band together to fight the darkness surrounding them.

The film, which has experienced multiple delays, is inspired by the iconic “Demon Bear” arc that took place in The New Mutants #18 through 20 and was created by the legendary Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz. If I can speculate here, it would seem as if the asylum is playing off Dani’s powers — her ability is to project a person’s worst fears, and she is innately connected with the Demon Bear entity that serves at the heart of the comic book story. That could be the direction this film is taking, if the trailer is any indication.

The trailer also offers our first look at the young mutants’ powers — we see hints of Sam (aka Cannonball’s) blasting field, and a brief shot of Sunspot’s solar form. Most exciting, perhaps, is Ilyana (aka Magik’s) manifestation of her Soulsword and Soulsword armor and her ability to create teleportation disks, all connected to her mutant power and, in the comics, an extended time she spent in the demonic dimension of Limbo.

The New Mutants is written and directed by Josh Boone, and is set to release on April 3rd.
