The latest episode of The Mandalorian began to shed some light on why our protagonist doesn’t remove his helmet in front of people. As Uproxx notes, the fourth episode titled “Sanctuary” was unveiled and saw the Mandalorian take off his helmet for the first time, though his face was not shown.

In the episode, he tells Omera (Julia Jones) that he hasn’t removed the helmet in front of another person since the time he was taken in by the Mandalorians. He tells Omera, “My parents were killed, and the Mandalorians took care of me.” This reveals that he isn’t Mandalorian by birth, but was raised as one. He does remove the helmet later so he can eat, but not in anyone’s presence. To his way of telling it, if he shows someone his face, he loses the privilege in Mandalorian society of ever putting it back on again.

The show is releasing weekly on Disney+ and has already been renewed for a second season.
