Thoughts on James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

Guardians of the Galaxy’s loss is Suicide Squads gain. Warner Bros. made the announcement that Gunn will be directing the Squad, bringing in a new team that doesn’t look to be connected to the 2016 movie.

The DC cinematic universe has had a number of big news items including pictures of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey and Ben Affleck confirming that he won’t portray Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Batman.

Gunn’s Suicide Squad was the latest big news item and is set for August 6, 2021. It looks to be a reboot that will take place in the DC cinematic universe continuity and it will focus on a “mostly all-new cast of characters and actors.”

The biggest question is which new characters will appear?

Time will tell if they’ll bring back any of the characters from the previous movie but you have to think that they’ll have Harley Quinn return, in some capacity.

Gunn is expected to put his stamp on the project and may be the missing component for the quirky team. The 2016 movie from director David Ayer’s brought in $746.8 million worldwide but was harshly savaged by critics.

While Ayer’s Suicide Squad had more of a New 52 line-up, the rumor is Gunn is interested in the original ’80s Squad from creator John Ostrander.

Already people are fantasy casting the return of Rick Flagg, Boomerang, led by Amanda Waller, along with the likes of Bronze Tiger, Vixen, Count Vertigo, Nightshade, and a number of other choice characters.

I can easily see them add someone like Deathstroke to the mix, in hopes of giving him a spinoff. Even Bronze Tiger has huge potential and could be DC’s answer to Marvel’s Black Panther.

We know Gunn has the goods to bring a different mood and tone to the project so he’s a near perfect for Suicide Squad.

Which characters or storyline do you want to see on the big screen?
