Thoughts On Latest Rumor Of The Mutants Coming to the MCU

Astonishing X-Men

Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of 20th Century Fox created a new landscape with Marvel owning the rights to the characters from the X-Men, as well as the Fantastic Four.

Since that time the biggest question on people’s mind is how Marvel would inject the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the most successful and celebrated shared cinematic universes of all time.

We’re getting close to finding out.

First, let’s not bring up X-Men: Dark Phoenix and New Mutants. With what’s in play now, all that has come before is forgotten.

Now let’s jump over to what’s on Marvel’s schedule. We have an Eternals project, a Black Widow solo movie. a Doctor Strange sequel, a Shang-Chi movie…looking down the list we don’t have many options of where they’d make a major move like introducing the X-Men would be.

When it comes to the X-Men, how should they be added to the mix?

General audiences have an idea of who the X-Men are on the big screen. Will it be too soon to recast everyone and start fresh? How will they explain mutants and why are they just now appearing in the Marvel universe?

Now we are starting to get our first round of rumors that say Marvel Studios has reportedly started developing a new X-Men movie that will be called The Mutants. Maybe.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said in the past that they are figuring out the plan to incorporate mutants in the MCU and we’ve heard a number of theories and fan fiction on how it will happen, including the multiverse.

But according to a report from The Illuminerdi, Marvel has started development on the MCU’s X-Men reboot with Feige producing the feature film. As with any rumors at this stage we have no word on plot details, writers, directors, or cast members. Just a title…which could change at any time.

It is interesting to note that Marvel Studios EVP of Production, Victoria Alonso, said in 2019 that she felt the X-Men name was outdated since there are so many women members. That by itself isn’t huge but not long after Feige said at San Diego Comic-Con that Marvel was working on bringing “mutants” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He used the term “mutants” twice and never said “X-Men” once. Something to think about.

At least we can safely assume Deadpool 3 is coming.

How would you like to see the X-Men on the big screen? I’m fine with them sliding hints into a TV series or in an upcoming movie. With the multiverse becoming a bigger and bigger part of the puzzle, it seems like an easy way to open a gateway into a much larger world. I wouldn’t even mind if they used the upcoming Deadpool to spearhead the initiative. How about you?
