Thoughts on The New Mutants Reshoots

When the first trailer for the The New Mutants came out a year ago, it caught plenty of people’s attention on its edgy mood and horror movie-like vibe. It looked smaller in scope, which is fine with all the grand epic superhero films we have, and was generally garnering positive buzz.

Then Disney bought Fox and everything was throw into doubt. Which movies would make the cut? Which would get nixed? The big question for The New Mutants was if it would get a theater release or end up on the new Disney+ streaming service.

Looks like we finally got some answers.

Disney and Marvel Studios are indeed planning on releasing The New Mutants into theaters. The project was said to need reshoots done, which is very common for movies these days, and those didn’t happen with all the Disney/Fox business going on.

Confirmation of the reshoots and release came from X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg, who told Digital Spy, “What’s happening is we’re gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney. That’s really it. Part of it was figuring out what the reshoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together.”

No exact date other than sometime in 2020. Concerning the scheduling, Kinberg went on to say, “For all of these movies, Marvel’s really brilliant at scheduling pick-ups into their budget and schedule so it’s all prepared, and we have never been that smart. For us, we’re always scrambling to get these actors back together so they’re all in the same place at the same time.”

I, for one, am happy to see The New Mutants come to the big screen. Anything that expands the superhero field is good in my book and darker stories have a place with audiences.

Plus, I really like the casting of this movie. It looks like they captured the spirit of the characters. Anya Taylor-Joy has Magik’s look down and I’m curious to see how Maisie Williams brings Wolfsbane to life.

Are you excited to see The New Mutants on the big screen?
