Toho Working On First Animated Godzilla Movie

Variety reports that Toho has announced that it will produce a feature-length animated Godzilla movie that will be released next year. Tokyo studio Polygon Pictures will produce with Kobun Shizuno (Detective Conan) and Hiroyuki Seshita (Knights of Sidonia) will co-direct. Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass: The Movie) will write thes tory and screenplay.

Toho has previously collaborated on animated shows in the past, but this is the first feature animated film they have produced. Shizuno said: “We’re aiming to make a big-scale animation entertainment that people who love Godzilla and people who know nothing about him can both enjoy.

The latest film in the series, Shin Gojira (Godzilla: Resurrection), has sold over two million tickets since it debuted on June 29 in Japan. It’s expected to bring in $50 million, compared to the $31.6 million Japan gross from Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla. Funimation will release the film in the US.
