Universal Bumps The Forever Purge Out of July Release

The Purge: Election Year

The Forever Purge will not be unleashed in July as originally planned. Universal Pictures has taken the fifth film in the popular Purge franchise out of its originally-set July 10th release date (per Bloody Disgusting. As of now, the film has no date set.

The film’s delay was largely expected, to be fair, to the point that most people have been ignoring the film and referring to the July 17th release of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet as the expected first major release in theaters since Hollywood shut down over COVID-19 concerns.

At this point, we don’t know what the plans are for the new Purge movie is. Universal has shown a willingness to put films out on Premium VOD, and The Purge does have a similar feel to The Hunt which was pushed out to digital after having the misfortune of releasing on the last weekend of theaters open nationwide. This is also, of course, the same studio that was willing to piss off AMC and Regal Theaters by intimating that they may release more films straight to digital after Trolls: World Tour’s success. As of now though, there is no announced plan to push Forever Purge straight to consumers.
