War for the Planet of the Apes Gets $22.1 Million Opening Day

Coming Soon reports that 20th Century Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes brought in $22.1 million yesterday from 4,022 theaters, including $5 million from Thursday preview. The film is set to earn $57.5 million this weekend, behind Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ opening weekend ($72.6 million) but ahead of Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million). The film had a budget of $150 million before marketing. It had a A- CinemaScore.

It’s expected the Apes will knock down Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures‘ Spider-Man: Homecoming to second place. The film earned $13.6 million yesterday at 4,348 locations for an opening weekend between $47 – 48 million and a two-week domestic total of $210 million. It had a budget of $175 million before marketing.

Meanwhile, Broad Green Pictures’ Wish Upon is expected to make only $5.5 million this weekend after getting $2.3 million on Friday from 2,250 theaters. It received a C Cinemascore.
