Warner Bros. is hoping that fans are willing to take the red pill one more time. THR reports that the studio is in early development of a Matrix “relaunch” with Zak Penn in talks to write a treatment for it. The site reports that the Wachowskis who wrote and directed the original trilogy, is not involved at this point and that while producer Joel Silver approached the studio about the possibility of a new film, Warners is hesitant to bring him on board because of his reputation for “budget-control issues” and his strained relationship with the Wachowskis.

The site says that there is a possible interest in Michael B. Jordan starring, although casting is a long way off at this point.

The original film was a game-changer for the industry when it released in 1999, both in terms of special effects and franchise-building. It won four Oscars and grossed $463.5 million worldwide on a budget of just $63 million. The sequels, Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, were much less popular with fans but were still big hits for the studio. Star Keanu Reeves has said that he would be interested in returning if the Wachowskis wrote and directed another film, but it is believed that the studio will look for a different A-list director and star.
