Was the Hobbs & Shaw Trailer Too Over the Top?

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw The Rock

The Fast and the Furious franchise has become Universal’s biggest franchise of all time and is currently the eighth-highest-grossing film series of all time with a combined gross of over $5 billion.

Let that sink in.

What started out as a series focused on street racing and heists has grown to one that covers espionage and saving the world.

It makes sense that it would evolve further and now we have one of the most anticipated spin-offs to any series with Hobbs & Shaw

But is it going too far for fans to tag along for the ride?

The trailer has plenty of the over-the-top action that we’ve come to know Fast & Furious for and Hobbs & Shaw crank it up even high as the duo take on the bad guy named Brixton. Dwayne Johnson’s former U.S. Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s ex-MI6 agent Deckard Shaw team up to save the world.

On paper it has big money written all over it. Idris Elba’s international terrorist Brixton brings it while looking seemingly indestructible. “I’m dealing with the future of the planet. I’m the necessary shock to the system. I am human evolutionary change — bulletproof, superhuman,” he says.

Hobbs & Shaw is the ninth chapter in the sprawling series and each movie seems to be set in outdoing the one before. Some have wondered when things will move to outer space or even crossover with another series like Men in Black or Predator.

But fans seem to love it. While the action gets bigger, so do the box office totals with the last two, Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious, bringing in $1,516 billion and $1,236 billion worldwide respectively.

Do I think it was too much? Yes. But that’s part of the appeal. What started out as a cheesy racing movie has accepted what makes it work and will keep ratcheting up the effects, to laughable levels in the name of entertainment .

Not only that, they pull in actors that have a good mix of chemistry and charisma so you can overlook those eye-roll moments. As long as they stick to the recipe, this thing has plenty of gas to last.

Don’t forget that back in April of last year that Universal and DreamWorks announced that they were creating an animated series based on the franchise that will be launched on Netflix.

And thus introducing a new generation of fans to the franchise that will drive on forever.
