Bogus! Fans of the Bill & Ted movie series have been waiting for a third chapter after the second one came out back in 1991. The project was discussed seriously
in 2010 when actor Keanu Reeves talked about the possibility in an interview that writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon were working on a script for a third film.

Fast forward to today and after years of starts and stops, it looks like it’s still not a sure thing. Yahoo did an interview with Reeves and asked about an update and he wasn’t as assuring as we wanted him to be.

“I don’t know if it’s a reality,” Reeves cautions. “We’ve been trying for a long time to get that film made, and it still has its challenges.”

Reeves went on to say that the situation has more to do with red tape and financing than anything creative. “I really love the characters, and I think we have a good story to tell. Part of it is show business stuff — financing, rights, deals. Nothing creatively.” Asked how he plans to approach the task of playing an older Ted “Theodore” Logan, Reeves says he’s still figuring that part out. “It’ll be interesting to see what that’s like,” he said. “There’d be a lot about him that would be the same, I’m sure; his kind of optimistic naïveté in the face of the darkness will still be there. He has a child now, so I’m sure he’s matured.”

We’ve gotten a few crumbs with details on where they will go in the latest movie, if it’s made. Back in April of 2016, Alex Winter told Forbes that they have a script and updated his remarks in February 2017 during an interview on The Graham Norton Show. He discussed the plot saying, “Basically, they’re supposed to write a song to save the world and they haven’t done that. The pressure of having to save the world, their marriages are falling apart, their kids are kind of mad at them, and then someone comes from the future and tells them if they don’t write the song it’s just not the world, it’s the universe. So they have to save the universe because time is breaking apart.”

During the New York City Comic Convention that year, Reeves revealed that the title would be Bill & Ted Face the Music.

In January of this year, Solomon, spoke to Digital Spy and gave an update saying, “We have a script that we really are proud of, that we worked very hard on, that we’ve done many iterations of – and we did it on spec, meaning we spent years working on it because we wanted to get it right, creatively. This is not, ‘Hey let’s all cash-in on the Bill & Ted thing for money’ – this is the opposite. This is, ‘We love these characters, they’ve been with us for our whole lives’ – Chris and me, and Alex and Keanu – and we wanted to visit them again as middle-aged men. We thought it would be really fun, and funny, and sweet.”

We have the original actors on board, the writers, a solid concept, and just waiting on…financing. Usually when you have a project like this, you roll your eyes and go on to the next news piece but Bill & Ted is a different concept and you really believe they want to do a fun, worthy sequel that everyone will enjoy. I, for one, would love to see this on the big screen.
