As we previously reported, the spin-off for How I Met Your Mother, called How I Met Your Father, is still in the works. Deadline reports that a writer has been hired for the project, and it’s Alison Bennett, best known for her work on FXX’s You’re The Worst.

CBS and 20th Century Fox TV tried to launch a spinoff three years ago with How I Met Your Dad, which was written by series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas along with Emily Spivey. Last season they tried again with This Is Us co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, but due to the schedule and popularity of that show (as well as a promotion to co-showrunners), it didn’t work out. They were going to write the script on spec at the studio. A similar approach will be taken with How I Met Your Father. It’s part of Bennett’s overall deal that she signed in April.

The story will feature a mother telling her kids how she met their father and it’s expected to include aspects of Bennett’s life. It will usually follow a group of young adults. No network is attached, but CBS said they would be interested. Bays and Thomas would executive produce but would not be involved other than that, as they have a deal at Sony TV.

20th TV President of Creative Affairs Jonathan Davis said: “We’re always on the lookout for fresh, new voices, and Alison’s work on You’re the Worst has been incredible. She is completely original, hilariously funny and a big, big talent.
