Netflix officially announced today that filmmaker Zack Snyder (Watchman, 300, Batman v Superman) is creating a new anime series that’s set in the world of Norse mythology. Snyder will also executive produce the show. He’s creating the series alongside veteran animation director Jay Oliva (Batman The Dark Knight Returns Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox). Oliva is attached as showrunner, director and executive producer.

Snyder’s wife, Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller will produce the show along with Zack Snyder through Stone Quarry Animation, which is their production company’s newest venture with Oliva.

Netflix head of anime programming, John Derderian stated on the news, “Zack Snyder’s innovation in visual storytelling has pushed the industry forward and established him as one of the most distinctive filmmakers of his generation. We are beyond excited to partner with him and his exceptional team to bring the iconic characters and stories of Norse mythology to life in his inimitable style.”

This is Snyder’s latest project with Netflix. He’s currently directing, writing and producer a new live-action zombie thriller for Netflix, Army of the Dead, for the streaming service. Army of the Dead will star former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista. The show does not yet have an official title or launch date.

This is the latest new anime title for Netflix along with other upcoming titles based on global IP, including Magic: The Gathering, Pacific Rim, Altered Carbon, Ghost in the Shell, and Transformers: War for Cybertron. Those shows are currently in development. Other new anime projects slated to debut this year include Cannon Busters, Seis Manos, and Levius.
