We reported earlier this week that the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was said to be close to death. Now TMZ reports that the worst has happened and Miss Franklin has passed away at the age of 76. She died today after a battle with advanced pancreatic cancer. She passed in her home in Detroit, where she was being treated by hospice. According to reports, she was down to 86 pounds at the time and a source claimed they were told over a week ago that she could go at any time. She was surrounded by her friends and family when she went. She is survived by her four sons.

Her family said in a statement: “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family.

Franklin is best known for her hit songs “Respect” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” She was born in Memphis in 1942, before moving to Detroit where she started to sing in her father’s church. She got a Columbia record deal in the early 1960s and then an Atlantic Records deal in 1967. She held the record for most entries on the Hot 100 for any female artist for almost forty years, before Nicki Minaj broke the record in 2017. She won eighteen Grammys and was the first woman inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

She didn’t perform often in her later years but still showed up for events like Barack Obama’s 2009 inaugeration, and the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors to pay tribute to “Natural Woman” co-writer Carole King.

411 would like to give our condolences to the family, friends and fans of this one-of-a-kind talent.
