Candence Weapon + Kaytranada – “My Crew” Track Review

Producer extraordinaire Kaytranada refuses to rest on his laurels. After delivering 99.9%, one of 2016’s stand out LPs, the Canadian is back behind the decks in support of his countryman Cadence Weapon, aka Rollie Pemberton. Both men have received Polaris Prize nods in the past and “Crew (Woo)” is a gorgeous slice of slinky hip hop that feels like the work of two men riding a wave of supreme self confidence.

Cadence can’t quite live up to the squelchy inhuman beat or the track’s thrillingly chilling chorus – a yelped “MY CREW!” leading into cool and hymnal elongated “woooo” – nevertheless, the rapper is certainly cocksure and charming in his own right. He might lack a distinctive flow or that one killer couplet that truly demands attention, but, as Cadence succeeds in injecting a sense of urgency into otherwise sedate track, it’s hard to avoid enjoying this ode to being yourself and making friends in a close nit community of likeminded musicians.

“My Crew (Woo)” is a hidden gem, if I were an A-grade MC, I’d be dying to jump on this beat and turn an understated, but unmistakable hook into a chart topper.

The final score: review Very Good

Kaytranada has done it again, teaming up with Cadence Weapon to deliver a slinky alien soundscape and one of the nascent year’s most distinctive hooks.
