The Associated Press (via The Huffington Post) that rapper Cardi B revealed that she turned down an offer to perform at the Super Bowl this year in support of former, controversial NFL player Colin Kaepernick. According to the rapper, she made the decision because she felt an obligation to “stand behind” Kaepernick for standing up to minorities with his controversial kneeling protest during the National Anthem.

Cardi B had mixed feelings about the decision, since her husband, rapper Offset, loves and watches football. She stated, “My husband, he loves football. His kids play football. It’s really hard for him. … He really wants to go to the Super Bowl, but he can’t go to the Super Bowl, because he’s got to stand for something. You have to sacrifice that. I got to sacrifice a lot of money to perform. But there’s a man who sacrificed his job for us, so we got to stand behind him.”

Kaepernick’s kneeling protest during the National Anthem was done in order to raise awareness for police brutality, racial inequality and other social issues. The instance caused a wave of controversy and also sparked other forms of National Anthem protests.

For tomorrow’s Super Bowl halftime show, Maroon 5 will be the musical performance along with Big Boi of Outkast and rapper Travis Scott. Gladys Knight will sing the National Anthem. Additionally, other musical performers who reportedly turned down halftime show offers include Rihanna and Pink.

Previously, Cardi B said she wouldn’t take the stage at the Super Bowl until Kaepernick is given a job. Instead, she’s performing at a downtown concert later this evening, the Bud Light Super Bowl Festival. It seems sort of interesting that she will still perform at a Super Bowl Weekend show with the Super Bowl name on, sponsored by Budweiser. Regarding criticism she might receive for still performing at Super Bowl-related parties and events, Cardi B stated on those who might find her hypocritical: “I hear people saying like ‘Oh, y’all are saying all this stuff about the Super Bowl, but you’re doing all these parties.’ And it’s like, well, if the NFL could benefit off from us, then I’m going to benefit off y’all. Y’all make the most money off our people. Why am I not going to take advantage of y’all and take money from y’all too? Because of y’all, we are getting these parties. OK, thank you.”

Cardi B added that she hopes the support for Kaepernick can help create positive changes in the world. However, she slammed President Donald Trump and racist people who feel “mighty brave” as of late. She continued, “We got an arrogant president, and the racism right now has been reborn. They feel mighty brave nowadays. When Obama was around, I just feel like they were praying on the day when his eight years was over. A lot of jealousy.”

Cardi B went on, “When they see (how) the choices they made due to racism has affected the country, that’s when things are going to start changing. Right now, they don’t want to accept that their decision has affected the country.”
