Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic Comment On Recent Nirvana Reunion

October 18, 2018 | Posted by Joseph Lee

In an interview with Kerrang, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic spoke about reuniting the surviving members of Nirvana for a performance at the Foo Fighters’ Cal Jam Festival. The two performed the band’s most famous song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Pat Smear joined the two, with Joan Jett and Deer Tick’s John McCauley providing vocals. Here are highlights:

Grohl on reuniting with Novoselic: “After we played the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I considered the idea that, if there was an opportunity, we could do it again. But it’s delicate territory, and you can’t treat it like just another show. It’s very complicated, and very special. In those moments, when it just happens naturally, I think is the best way.”

Grohl on playing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” again: “[It’s like] being shot into outer space. Being able to play that drum fill and break into the chorus…it’s spiritual, physical, emotional.”

Novoselic on how it felt to reunite: “Personally, it was great to play with those guys again, and to play those songs.”
