Jam Central Station 11.03.12: The Werks – 10/31/12 – Beachland Ballroom – Cleveland, OH

November 3, 2012 | Posted by mojo4395

Hey all! Hope you had a great Halloween, and for you east coast folks, I hope you weren’t hit too bad by the storm. We lost trick or treating on Wednesday, but obviously that’s been rescheduled. Other than that, Ohio made it out OK with just a few power outages. And luckily The Werks came to town to turn things around for a huge crowd as well. Let’s check it out!

It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to witness the elevation of a band first hand. I’ve had a couple of bands that I followed from their local days all the way up through national success. I’ve seen the signs that point to an upcoming breakthrough and drastically increased success. I’ve watched what happens when bands are able to devote 100% of their energy towards making music and begin to make a living with their talent. It’s a pretty spectacular thing to be a part of, and I’m ready to say that we’re getting ready to see it again. I may be a little later to the party than some, but, after seeing The Werks on Halloween at the Beachland in Cleveland, I’m ready to say that The Werks are absolutely ready to take their music to the next level.

To start the night off, openers Aliver Hall put on a solid jam/rock set with a great groove. The band has been beefing up their regional tour schedule recently, and there’s good reason for it. They’re a lot of fun, and they certainly fit the bill to kick off the party for The Werks. They’ve been making the rounds on smaller festivals for the past couple of years and released a new album a few months back. They’re definitely an up and coming band worth checking out.

Everyone was there for one band, though. The Werks wasted little time getting things started, taking the stage just before 11 and ripping through the first set. This was probably the best Werks set I’ve seen to date, with the band mixing in high-energy extended jams into some great songs. I still need to study up on my Werks catalog, but I certainly enjoyed the entire set. I’m a sucker for cover songs, and the band pulled out a great first set cover with “Fly Like An Eagle” by the Steve Miller Band. They took the song on a 15 minute journey before bringing it back for the final verse.

The second set started off a bit more mellow than the first, but the band picked things up again with another unexpected cover. They did a funk-laden version of “Salty Chocolate Balls,” the infamous Chef song from South Park. It may be a novelty song, but that doesn’t mean the band didn’t kick some ass with it. The kept with the funk for much of the second set, but definitely dabbled in some heavy psychedelic jams as well.

Unfortunately we had to leave about halfway through the second set (that’s the curse of a Wednesday night show and day jobs), but it was a great way to spend Halloween. The crowd was decked out in full Halloween garb, with original costumes and the obligatory sexy ladies. The band played it up with costumes, a costume contest, and obviously some fun covers. The Werks are doing everything right right now, building a solid fan base and delivering every time they get on stage.

So there’s nothing from the show on YouTube yet, but here’s a link where you can watch most it. Worth checking out, no doubt!

RIP Larry Bloch
Larry Bloch passed away earlier this week at the age of 59. Bloch was the founder of The Wetlands, a club in New York City. Not only was The Wetlands an iconic venue in the 90’s, but Bloch also used the club to fund a non-profit Center for Social and Environmental Justice. Bloch’s passing has been memorialized already by many of the artists who played his club.
