Justin Timberlake performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show last night, a set that included a hologram of Prince. However, things weren’t perfect and according to TMZ, the show was riddled with audio issues. The website claims that there were time when Timberlake was “impossible to hear”, as he would occasionally be muted and “almost silent.” The report suggests that his backup singers could be heard more clearly than he could. It’s unknown if he was aware of the microphone issues.

It gets worse, however. Prince fans did not appreciate the use of the hologram at the show, mostly because Prince himself wouldn’t have approved of it. Prince spoke with Guitar World Magazine in 1998 and was asked about the idea of digitally doing duets with performers who had passed away.

When asked if he would do something like that, he said: “Certainly not. That’s the most demonic thing imaginable. Everything is as it is, and it should be. If I was meant to jam with Duke Ellington, we would have lived in the same age. That whole virtual reality thing… it really is demonic. And I am not a demon. Also, what they did with that Beatles song [“Free As a Bird”], manipulating John Lennon’s voice to have him singing from across the grave… that’ll never happen to me. To prevent that kind of thing from happening is another reason why I want artistic control.

Comedian Sinbad also pointed out that Prince and Timberlake had their issues when the Purple One was alive.

He’s referring to Prince’s reaction to Timberlake’s song “Sexy Back”, in which he said that sexy “never left.” This resulted in Timberlake putting a line in “Give It To Me” in which he said: “Don’t hate on me just because you didn’t come up with it.

Later, Timberlake lowered a microphone for Prince to mock his height during the Golden Globes.

Overall, it seems Timberlake is catching a lot of criticism for his performance last night.
