Kanye West nearly headlined this year’s Coachella, but backed out just before he was to be announced after the Festival wouldn’t build him a giant dome. Billboard reports that West agreed to do the Festival and was two days away from beind announced before he backed out over an impasse about the dome, which he wanted to use as a stage and would have been designed by West’s set designer John McGuire.

Coachella organizers told West that his demand wasn’t possible because the dome would cost too much and require a complete re-arrangement of the festival grounds. West demanded that the stage be in the center of the grounds, and thought the main stage — one of the largest in North America — wasn’t big enough for his set. What West wanted done would have necessitated the removal of many of the festival’s portable bathrooms and when the Coachella execs told this to West, he became “irritated” and said he was, in Billboard’s words, “an artist with a creative vision who shouldn’t be spending his time talking about port-a-potties.” He told the people from Goldenvoice — Coachella’s parent company — that he was on vacation with his family and that it was the festival’s responsibility to deal with the bathrooms before hanging up.

Goldenvoice quickly changed course after that, moving to secure Ariana Grande as a replacement. Grande was announced less than twenty-four hours after West pulled out,.

The festival runs from April 12 through the 14th and April 19th through the 21st.
